Discovered in Western Australia’s remote East Kimberley, the Argyle diamond deposit was identified in 1979, with the mine beginning production in 1983. Over the next 37 years, Argyle would become famous for producing some of the world’s most distinctive natural pink diamonds.
Despite producing more than 865 million carats of rough diamonds during its lifetime, pink diamonds represented less than 0.1% of Argyle’s annual production. Remarkably, the mine was responsible for more than 90% of the world’s pink diamond supply, making these stones an extraordinarily small part of an already unique Australian story.
The Argyle Diamond Mine permanently ceased production in November 2020. With no new diamonds able to be recovered from the deposit, every genuine Argyle Pink Diamond now represents a finite piece of Western Australian diamond history.
